If deer are nibbling your garden, one solution is growing plants that they don't like. Deer avoid eating plants for a variety of reasons, including because of their taste, smell, texture or toxicity. Gardeners can choose from a wide variety of deer-resistant plants that grow in many conditions. For example, ferns are excellent shade perennials—and deer tend to pass them by. Coneflowers are deer-resistant sun lovers. When growing a deer-resistant garden, select plants that will grow in your hardiness zone and soil type. Also, make sure they are suitable for the amount of sunlight the area receives. Other factors to consider are their mature height and spread, bloom time and flower color.
